What is worse in the NCAA eyes or in the media's eyes. I guess its cool to pay recruits in Espin eyes. Why arent there any reporters in Nike's baby Oregon. Why is this not getting any attention. This is crazy they got our coach fired. Chip Kelly needs to lose his Job to. I guess the love to hate us... Go BUcks..!!
Had Tressel come clean from the start and not try to cover up the infractions he would still have his job today. Oregon currently states that there has been no wrong doing and that everything they've done is on the up and up. If, however, this is not the case and Chip Kelly attempted to cover up recruiting infractions AND (this is a big AND) there is a paper trail confirming he lied to the NCAA then he will likely lose his job as well.
The more interesting question to me is how long will it take before ESPiN, SI, SbB, and others are in Oregon starting an "investigation". One of the bigggest arguements of media supporters like tornado was that because there was so much smoke it must have been a out of control forest fire in Columbus. The media had to do there job. Well it seems there is just as much evidence and maybe more here with one of the key people involved talking and he has some paperwork to back it up. If we don't see the media camped out in Eugene over the coming weeks we'll know once and for all the media was on a witch hunt with tOSU.
One of the things that pisess me off is they have a spokesman speaking out on behalf of their university, where the hell was Smith speaking out on behalf of tOSU?
Wow. That's a damning report. I am not familiar with NCAA bylaws but it sounds like Chip Kelly was willfully commiting major recruiting violations.
Sounds troubling but Oregon isn't half the program Ohio State is so just watch how they get half the publicity as the Buckeyes.
Ohio State is going to get hammered by the NCAA because we are the big fish. Whatever happens we are going to bring the lumber this season so this is a warning to everyone on our schedule. The Silver Bullets are coming so get off the tracks!
Dang I'm ready for some football!!!!
This is going to get bad for the Ducks!! Yahoo is involved so it honestly has to be bad. Coach Kelly better get ready!!
I think the timing of this situation is actually good for OSU since it will force the NCAA to weigh and judge the relative wrongdoing by Tress/OSU and Kelly/Oregon. In the first instance, the coach lied about player receiving improper benefits. In the second, the coach himself violated NCAA bylaws regarding recruiting and tried to cover it up at the last minute by getting Lyles to send the player info once they got wind of Yahoo snooping around.Technically it does not look good for Kelly. If the media is at all objective which they claim (but no one really believes) then they should be calling for Kelly's head as they did with Tress.
On the Scout OSU board, someone posted the bylaws and it seems clear that Lyles acted as booster for Oregon and boosters/street agents are off limits in recruiting.
Total Oregon meltdown on the ESPN comments thread. Man, I feel their pain. If the media decides to set up shop in Eugene, the could be looking at hefty sanctions. People are saying that Phil Knight paid for a star basketball recruit to visit Oregon and that there are "other" problems with the football program. Not to mention the football players driving a car rented by a University employee.I understand what you are saying about the size of the programs. At this point, I disagree about the "hammer" part. The media and Buckeye haters are calling for the hammer. Right now, the only things proven are the "Tat 5," and that issue is decided, and of course Jim Tressel, which we'll know sometime after the hearing. The NCAA and OSU has already stated the "Tat 5" issue is a done deal. Out of all the additional allegations, NOTHING else has been proven as of yet (knock on wood!). No cars, no additional players per the bogus $I article, no vacations or living arrangements. So that leaves the Pryor and Talbott thing. Unless they really do have copies of checks from Pryor's university account, ( I hear that story is suspect!), that won't be provable either; what is left? There is the potential repeat offender issue, but I don't know how much that will really play into this. I believe the NCAA must show there is a systemic problem still relating to the prior issues. If that is true, this has nothing to do with the Basketball team issues. The reality is that the school self reported this, cooperated fully, and Tressel and Pryor are gone. To this point, there has been no LOIC, or failure to monitor issued by the NCAA. The NCAA won't destroy us without that happening. A good sign (for now) could be Adam Rittenberg saying how surprised he was that the NCAA has not issued a continuance for the Aug 12th hearing as of yet. I hope we have another giant sh!+ sandwich to give the media, just like 03/04. Remember, our demise was predicted then as well. Maybe worse than now! If nothing else is proven, I don't see this being as bad as the media is calling for and wants. Perhaps some vacated victories & probation. If we get beaten based on what is proven thus far, it is a lesson to all to NOT self report and cooperate. Take a page out of Auburn's book and band together, and LIE, LIE, LIE! I know it didn't work for SC, but hell...$cam won a Heisman and his school won an NC when his daddy admitted he shopped his son for $200K! Of what I understand the rules to say, it doesn't matter if his son knew at all, or if $ really changed hands! There is something to be said for the "I didn't know" defense if there is no hard, factual proof! I hope we beat this as best as possible as all of us should. I'd love nothing else but the hear the media moan like an old whore about us getting off lighter than expected! We think it's bad now...if that happens, just wait!
I'm just glad it will help take some heat off OSU.
This will be interesting to watch unfold. On top of what we actually know, I wonder if Sports Illustrated will send in Dorkman with his wild imagination to make additional things up about Oregon and write a big article in an attempt to try to get Oregon's executive board to force Kelly out.
