From 7/13 New York Times: NCAA says Auburn/Cam investigation NOT over!

Julie Roe Lach, the N.C.A.A.’s vice president for enforcement, made a presentation to the group, which included every men’s basketball coach, football coach and athletic director in the conference. When she opened up the room for discussion, Auburn’s football coach, Gene Chizik, raised his hand first.
He peppered Roe Lach with a flurry of questions about the N.C.A.A.’s investigation into Cam Newton and why the N.C.A.A. had not publicly announced that the investigation was over. Chizik complained that the inquiry’s open-ended nature had hurt Auburn’s recruiting and he followed up at least three times, leading to a testy exchange.
You’ll know when we’re finished,” Roe Lach told Chizik, according to several coaches who were at the meeting. “And we’re not finished.

First, some Auburn message board reactions:

I find it odd that this exchange occurred last month yet this is the first I've heard of it. Especially with a room full of witnesses. Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall if it's true. With Thamel as the author, who knows?

No, its not over. Mississippi State is being investigated, which the NCAA cannot confirm nor deny.

Please don't click on the link and give this goof more hits

That article should have been titled "Grasping for Straws"

That's a bunch of BS the NCAA has sat on this thing for a year and has found nothing. Gene has a right to know when they are going to stop to dragging this thing when it's crystal clear we are innocent.

I find it very hard to believe that Chizik would raise his hand among a crowd of peers and effectively walk into an ambush. An exchange like the one described would be an attempt by Chizik to embarrass the NCAA rep in public, and I know for certain that he didn't try to do that. He would take this conversation, if it even occurred, behind closed doors.

it sounds like some lie a 1st grader made up b/c Thamel knows it's over as far as AU is concerned...the whole time I was reading it, I was thinking, this guy has NO idea about any of this and is just butt-hurt b/c he put all his chips on us def. going down and we didn't...Chizik would have NEVER done what was described and Chizik knows recruiting is going very well.

This is quite contradictory to what Randy Kennedy of Mobile said. He was part of a group of sports reporters who met with the NCAA.. His statement was that the NCAA said that it was essentially over. That it was up to the school to say "when" and that they only advise the school not to say it's over.

I wish Chiz would have stood up and said "Is Gene Chizik gonna have to smack a *****?"

The New York Times: a horseshit of a newspaper that has always been borderline treasonous.

It is interesting to me that in all the statments about what took place, it is never said that Roe Lach pointed at Auburn as being the subject of investigation, but when the author gets to the point of drawing his own take, he concludes that the NCAA rep. meant Auburn.

PLOI's have to be released under the FOIA.........how come no one can find one concerning Auburn except for Pete Thamel?   reckon he is just making **** up?

I believe we're innocent, but the only thing that's "crystal clear" here is that most of the coaches and ADs in the conference believes we are guilty.

Lets assume that every word of the article is true. It makes me feel even better about our situation. If we were guilty, why would our coach stand up in a room full of people and mock the NCAA? At a time where they could still penalize us?

They have nothing to punish us for and we are innocent. Sorry mrs thamel. Another swing and a miss.

rather than assuming the worst we should expect the most likely, and that means this "exchange" didn't happen as described by Thamel if it happened at all. Thamel is one of the least respected sports journalists in the business and has a reputation of one who sells integrity for a dramatic story. He missed his calling as a novelist.

the pre season anti Auburn paid by updyke media has begun

My personal speculation is that - establihed facts be damned- the NCAA is choosing to let this "cold case" simply stay "open" as long as the statutes allow - for totally self serving and selfish reasons.  That being simply to avoid any additional public outcry that they allowed AU to "get away" with something.

I am not sure how the NCAA works, but i find it hard to believe that the head coach of the football team would not know if an investigation is still going on.   There are many things about this piece that are very wierd.

That guy has had it in for Auburn for far too long. He is Thayer's little buddy.  Journalism is dead.

Although Chizik has been very deliberate and masterful in the way he has represened AU and himself, this was a mistake, IMO.  There was very little upside possible for this kind of exchange and only gives media outlets an opportunity to trumpet that the AU investigation is not over yet.  Until now, it actually felt like there was a reluctant acceptance beginning to set in that this thing was virtually over.  This breathed life right back into it.

Pete Thamel is a disgrace to his "profession" such as it is anymore. I have a degree in journalism, and I didn't learn it the way it is being practiced today. Opinion, innuendo, quoting "sources" such as internet blog postings...it stinks.Thamel nakedly has an agenda. He has been after Auburn for years. The Tuscaloosa News/New York Times connection is blatant. The New York Times, with its reporters getting nailed for fabricating stories, declining subscriptions and sales, liberal politics, and layoffs because it's in a dying business, is a joke.
Curious how Thamel and the Times has never looked into or written about Alabama. Mike Dubose, Mike Price, oversigning, processing, Dre Mom's Caddy, Dre's Charger, Ingram and Julio's fisihng trip, laptops, Calloway, Peaches, Bedford, Cyrus Kouandjio, Dr. Phillips facilities upgrades, Cecil Hurt's "loans" from bammer boosters, or ANYTHING about bammer. We are on to you, dumbass.

Chizik's point is valid. The NCAA's policy of not commenting is hurting institutions that make a lot of money and have a lot of attorneys attached to. Chizik, Auburn, and the SEC may be pushing to change NCAA policy or at least win something in the court of public opinion. If nothing comes of their "investigation" Chizik has established that the NCAA has caused damages.

Gene has no fear of the NCAA and has no trouble telling them when they need to get their butts in gear.

Pete Thamel has no credibility.

I think the NCAA has listened to a few too many Updykes, and they actually think that this Bingo trial may yet turn up some evidence against Auburn. If not that, the NCAA probably thinks the investigation into Colonial Bank is going to reveal the smoking gun, or the Lowder on the grassy knoll. To me, there's just no way that this investigation could still be ACTIVELY ongoing. There aren't that many individuals involved, and the key people have already been interviewed LONG ago. I think the NCAA is merely hoping that something will fall into their lap.

The media so badly misreported and mischaracterized the issue of Cam's eligibility that the college sports
world is convinced we got a free pass. The NCAA (wrongly) has egg on their face and they seek redemption.

It sounds like the coach is sick and tired of AU being thrown under the bus with no proof of wrongdoing. Either charge us with something or get out of the way.

I hope he comes out and says "I am sick and tired of listening to all of this garbage when I know that AU did nothing wrong and I am going to continually question the NCAA until they finally tell me it is over."

And now, the rest of the SEC fan message boards weigh in on the matter:

Death Penalty.

Roe with the BOOM!!

How's it hurting AU's recruiting? I thought Chizik was so religious? That's a straight up lie from Gene.

WOW! Auburn is going to get it.

Wow, Chizik really showed his ass there. Brazen, to say the least. That is the kind of Auburn hubris that is gonna piss the NCAA right off. Whatever CHIZ was trying to do, that was not the proper forum.

He lied about paying Cam, why wouldn't he lie about this?

There are two ways to read this...Auburn fans will uniformly pick one, and fans of every other SEC school will uniformly pick the other.

So did Chizik tell a lie when he was on ESPN last week? He said it was over.

To be fair, it isn't anything totally new. Everyone but the most head in the sand Auburn fan knew they were being investigated.

i'm a little surprised chiz was ballsy enough to be confrontational tho - attitude means a lot with the ncaa

Shit got realz!

I bet the trees will be dying again tomorrow

i just know that when coaches start running to the press, especially the national press, to get every bit of info out, its not going to turn out well for the whole conference. there are too many people who want to see the SEC fall right now

Roe owned Chizik.

What a lame ass excuse... but, but, it's hurting our recruiting. Bull Shit Chizik.

I guess we know why AU didn't release their secondaries.

Sounds like Roe made Chizzy look like a shithead in front of everyone and in the same process made him her bitch

I wonder how many recruits are getting lied to as we type tonight.

Non AU fans fapping and fawning with glee, Auburn fans saying big deal and then we move on to the next story.

makes me wonder if maybe the entire SEC West might get on probation.

the only thing that article shows is that you cant trust the other coaches in the SEC

I wonder who got paid more for their service Cam Newton or Terelle Pryor?

2010 Hogs: 12-1!

It's all just a big smear campaign dreamed up last October to bring down the mighty tigers, who everyone knew was going to have the perfect storm of a season and win a NC.

that happened several weeks ago and the compliance officer has since spoken about about Cam. That is not protocol for a CO to discuss a case that is under investigation.

so this is gonna be the weekly auburn is going down thread?

A lot of barners trying to not show their concern ITT. That's right guys...just keep those heads in the sand. It will all go away soon.

The compliance officer for Auburn has since commented on the Cam Newton saga. A CO is not allowed to discuss an ongoing case by the NCAA.

So you would rather have your coach hide his face instead of stand up for his school?

Not sure what you expect...a press release from the AU compliance director that says "we're fucked!!" Dude is towing the company line.

Funny, LSU fans have been quoting their AD saying they've done everything right regarding Lyles. that's good enough for lsu fans but when AU's people say it they're towing the company line

But, let's think about this....... the AU compliance officer feels like it's over, right? But AU hasn't made any official public statement to suggest that. Given Chizik's whining about no announcement of it being over, don't you think that will be the very first thing he does when it actually IS over? You know, for recruiting and all.
